Dakin Matthews was born in Oakland, California on November 7, 1943. He has four children with his wife actress/director, Anne Marie McNaughton, who directed Dakin's play "The Prince of L.A." at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in September, 2005. He is a former teacher, he has a degree in theology and studied at the Vatican. He taught drama at Juilliard and is an Emeritus Professor of English from California State University. Among his former students are Kevin Kline, Annette Bening and Patti LuPone.
